Minecraft in October 2026: what changes for plugin and mod devs
The news in short
Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4 is in the release tracker, dated 13 October. It adds Brittle Ice in Ice Caves and some ice and mob changes.
Minecraft.net published Bedrock Preview 26.70.20 on 13 October, with block fixes such as frosted ice vibration events.
Minecraft Live 2026 previewed Minecraft Dungeons II and The Sift, described by coverage as the first new dimension in 14 years, and announced Frozen Caves for 2027. Coverage also gives 27 October 2026 as the date for the Switch 2 version.
What it means for Java plugins
Snapshots are for testing. Do not move a live server to a snapshot: run a copy of your server, load your plugin, and check the console for API warnings.
A plugin is built against one server API version. When you move to a new Minecraft version, rebuild the plugin against that version and read the server's own release notes for API changes.
- Pin the server version in your deployment, so an automatic update cannot change it.
- Rebuild and retest every plugin after a server update, even if nothing in your code changed.
- Keep the source files: a rebuild is only possible if you still have the sources and the build file.
What it means for mods
Each mod loader (Fabric, Quilt, Forge, NeoForge) releases its own version for each Minecraft version. A mod written for one loader and one Minecraft version will not run on another.
Before you update, check that your loader has a release for the new version, then rebuild the mod with Gradle using the version values in gradle.properties.
How we follow it
Our Minecraft generator asks for the server or loader version in every request, so the code it writes targets the version you name. When the platform's guidance changes for a Minecraft version, we update the page and this article is dated again.
